The intersection at the corner of Washington Street and 12th Street NEEDS to be either a traffic light...or, at the very least, a four way stop!!!! (I know that the city said, (when they fixed up Washington Street), that they didn't want to do that "because it is a main through street".
Well...it is an incredibly DANGEROUS intersection!!!
In the mornings...the traffic going downhill turns it into a race track! They go way over the speed limit! (all day too...not just in the mornings)...and they go too fast uphill too. It is also a poor visibility intersection, (for the drivers on 12th Street), the visibility looking downhill (toward Tony's Fish Market) is very limited...and there may not be a car coming as you start to cross the street...but then it comes zooming into view over the "crest" of the hill into view...and, usually going too fast.
Also. ..for pedestrians, ..I have waited 10 minutes! (NOT exaggerating here!) to cross Washington Street! NO ONE stops for pedestrians!...even two O. C. police cars went right on by while we were waiting to cross!, (this was in the same 10 minute time span...no, they were not together, nor did they have their emergency lights on)...when we watched them drive on by...we could see that they didn't even know we were there.
I don't know what kind of "records" anyone keeps of the crashes at that intersection...but the unrecorded "near misses" is astronomical in numbers!
One block further up the hill, at the intersection of Washington as 11th Street, if you are headed uphill on Washington Street, and are going to make a left turn onto 11th Street, it is a one lane street. so while you are waiting for downhill traffic (on Washington St.) to clear...the cars behind you do everything possible to pass you on the right...even if it means almost crashing into you, or hitting the curb...which I seen them do many times..and usually without any, or much, attempt to slow down.
from my house, I am within view of the intersection of 12th Street and Madison Street, (at the corner by the Barclay School). While working in my yard...I have counted 117 cars just go flying by the stop signs on 12th Street...without even trying to slow down at all. (I don't make a habit of counting them all the time, but the day I did...it was 117 cars..and I wasn't even looking all the time...because I was working my yard...not on "traffic patrol").
I wanted to point these issues out to you....especially the 12th Street and Washington situation..it is TERRIBLE!!! One of the "craziest" intersections I have ever seen!
